How come the soil test kit doesn't work?

I'm using a Ferry Morse Test Kit(http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/4677200/93860_Full.jpg) to test Nitrogen in my soil. I followed the directions, I put soil, the tablet, and distilled water into the tube. The color should be pinkish, but it just looks like mud water. Why?
